What Is Lawn Lime?
Lawn lime is a soil amendment made from limestone. Its primary job is to raise the pH of soil that’s too acidic.
Soil pH measures how acidic or alkaline your soil is. While a pH of 7 is neutral, most turfgrasses prefer slightly acidic soil, generally around a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. When soil becomes too acidic, lime can help move its pH back toward a range that’s more favorable for grass.
What Does Lime Actually Do for Your Lawn?
Soil pH affects how available certain nutrients are to your grass. Even if nutrients are present in the soil, overly acidic conditions may make it more difficult for grass to access some of them effectively.
Applying the appropriate amount of lime to acidic soil helps correct that growing environment. As the soil pH moves toward the appropriate range, grass can make better use of the nutrients available to it.

Is Lime the Same as Fertilizer?
No. Lime and fertilizer serve different purposes. Fertilizer supplies nutrients your grass needs for growth, while lime adjusts soil pH when the soil is too acidic. Adding fertilizer doesn’t correct a soil pH problem. Likewise, lime doesn’t replace the nutrients provided by fertilizer.
Instead, the two can play complementary roles in lawn care. Fertilizer provides nutrients, while lime can help create soil conditions where those nutrients are more available when pH is too low.
How Do You Know If Your Lawn Needs Lime?
You can’t reliably determine your lawn’s pH just by looking at the grass. Thin grass, poor color or slow growth can have many possible causes, from drought and compaction to shade and other growing conditions.
A soil test provides a clearer answer. Testing can measure your lawn’s pH and help determine whether lime is needed and how much should be applied. This is important because more lime isn’t necessarily better. The goal is to bring acidic soil toward the appropriate pH range, not to make the soil as alkaline as possible.
Soil conditions can also change over time. Many North East soils are naturally acidic, which is one reason pH can be an important consideration for lawns in the region.
When Is the Best Time to Apply Lime?
Lime can be applied at different times of the year, but fall is the ideal time to address soil pH when lime is needed. Freezing and thawing over winter can also help incorporate lime into the soil.
Fall also happens to be an important season for Aeration & Overseeding. Core aeration creates openings throughout the soil to help relieve compaction. Those openings can also help lime enter the soil rather than remaining entirely at the surface.
Lime also works gradually. You shouldn’t expect an immediate visual change after treatment. It can take months for a lime application to measurably change soil pH.
