Why gutter guards don’t work

Gutter cleaning is an essential part of home maintenance and upkeep. Although gutter guard companies claim they prevent gutter cleaning forever, every single gutter guard system we have tested has not worked as advertised!

Gutter guards accumulate debris that damages your roof and gutters. Small debris builds up inside the system while large debris remains on top. Over time, these guards will be covered in the dust, dirt, mildew, root and grit that accumulates on your roof every day.

In heavy rains, gutter guard debris will cause water to flow over the top of the gutters causing costly damages to your home. Overflowing gutters mean thousands of gallons of water pooling around your foundation. Additionally the wood behind the gutter will begin to rot, and the gutters will warp.

 

Problems with Different Gutter Guards

Aluminium Mesh Guards

Large debris will cake on to these expensive mesh systems, causing water to spill over the gutter. Small debris and roof shingles will still get inside.

Gutter Screens

Small debris will get inside these screens and over time will clog up the system, which can eventually lead to plants growing out of the gutter screens.

Gutter Helmet

These solid or “bull-nose” systems work off the principal of service tension, but once dirty water will just fly right off the system, not into your gutter. Debris gets stuck in the gap between the gutter and guard.

Waterfall Gutter Guards

Debris constantly gets caught in the slits of these systems. Smaller debris will get in and build up over time.

There’s no such thing as, “Never clean your gutters again, 100% clog free” gutter guards. Gutter guards allow debris inside the gutters and have to be cleaned!

We do not recommend screening or gutter guards. Ned Stevens has searched for and experimented with all types of products that claim to prevent gutter clogs for nearly 60 years. In short, we’ve found that there’s no such thing as a “no clog” gutter.

The solution for gutter clogs is simple: clean the gutters on a regular schedule. You can do this by signing up for one of our ongoing gutter cleaning service plans, and you won’t worry about your gutters again.

In our 50+ of being in the gutter industry, we have never encountered a gutter system that wasn’t prone to clogs. The only way to truly avoid clogs is by regularly cleaning your gutters. Solutions like gutter screens and gutter guards do not do the job; they may appear to work for a month, but never in the long term.

The only other way to prevent clogs would be to cut down all the trees near your home, or make your home taller!

Ned Stevens knows that we’re probably losing out on some sales because of our decision to not prioritize the sale of gutter guards. But as gutter professionals and homeowners ourselves, we cannot in good faith sell a product that doesn’t do its job. We’ve been in the gutter business for nearly 60 years, and know you have to do things right if you do them at all.
The saying goes: “a good offense is a good defense.” This perfectly applies to gutters. The only way to avoid clogged gutters is by regular gutter cleanings.
