With the holidays right around the corner, our mouths are already watering thinking about all the delicious food we’ll soon be devouring. And while the turkey may play the starring role in many holiday meals, what we’re really looking forward to are the side dishes, especially the mashed potatoes. And while potatoes are delicious no matter what, this year we decided it would be fun to put a twist on our favorite holiday side dish. So we’ve gathered some great recipes from some of our favorite food bloggers to share with you. Let’s dig in!
Horseradish Mashed Potatoes
Want to add a little kick to your mashed potatoes? Throw in some horseradish! Sylvia Fountaine from “Feasting at Home” has a great, easy to follow recipe that will leave your guests begging for seconds (and thirds). We recommend serving with meaty dishes (like turkey and pot roast) and keeping the serving dish close by because you’ll want to reload as well.
Roasted Garlic and Goat Cheese Mashed Potatoes
Jessica Merchant, food blogger of “How Sweet It Is,” shares a delicious potato recipe with an added layer of flavor. Roast a head of garlic in the oven then toss into your mashed potato mix. Don’t forget the goat cheese for extra texture and flavor. Since these potatoes are lighter, they will go great with traditional Thanksgiving food, like turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and green beans.
Whipped Bourbon Bacon Sweet Potatoes
For the Southerners out there, we offer whipped bourbon bacon sweet potatoes! These potatoes also come from blogger Jessica Merchant, and they are slap your mama good! (Just kidding, that’s a southern saying.) We recommend pairing this with a hearty meat, like turkey or even pork chops if you want to steer away from traditional Thanksgiving food.
Irish Carrot and Parsnip Mash
Who said you only need potatoes for mashed potatoes? Whip parsnips and carrots together for a new and fun starchy dish! These “mashed potatoes” from food blog “The Kitchen McCabe” add an interesting texture to your favorite holiday side dish. You won’t regret adding them to your table. If you don’t want to make mashed parsnips and carrots, you can also roast parsnips and sweet potatoes for a different side dish.
Mashed Potato Cups
Who doesn’t love individual food items? These mashed potato cups are adorable and practical. Just make them in muffin tins for all of your guests. Don’t forget to top with cheese and chives for added flavor! Serve with turkey, pot roast or even meatloaf. Think comfort food!
Tex-Mex Smashed Potatoes
With sharp cheddar cheese, an array of peppers and lots of butter, this Mexican-inspired potato dish is from the great minds at the food blog “Gimme Some Oven.” While you might not want to make it for Thanksgiving or Christmas, it’s great for any other party! Plus, your guests will beg you for the recipe. Pair these potatoes with a juicy steak for the perfect Southwestern combo.
Mashed Potato Balls
Not all mashed potatoes have to be side dishes. This concoction from “Damn Delicious” can also serve as an appetizer and believe us, they are damn delicious! Fried balls of mashed potatoes, cheese, chives and bacon make the perfectly portioned dish. Garnish with parmesan and chives, then serve with ranch or sour cream as dips. Delish!
Happy mashing!
