Prevent health hazards around your home by keeping your gutters free of blockages. Blockages create habitats for unwelcome pests like mosquitoes.

While some people choose to neglect their gutter system, what they don’t realize is that their complacency is actually posing a serious threat to their families and neighbors.  Left alone, stagnant water inside clogged gutters can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  Although mosquitoes themselves are just tiny insects that tend to leave us with annoying and itchy bites, what they may carry can prove to be much more devastating:  the West Nile Virus.

What Is West Nile Virus?

The West Nile Virus has become a pressing issue in recent years and its symptoms are very similar to the flu – fever, headache, and chills.  These common symptoms tend to trick infected individuals into thinking they are suffering from a non-serious case of influenza, when in reality they may be developing meningitis that can lead to death.  The West Nile Virus continues to spread throughout the United States and thousands have already perished since its initial outbreak in the early 2000s.  More recently, mosquitoes trapped in central Connecticut have tested positive for the virus, with neighboring towns already seeing an increase in mosquitoes carrying West Nile.  As a result, many northeastern states are scrambling to help prevent more cases from developing.  New York has even banned bird baths, as the constant standing water is a favorite nesting spot for mosquitoes.

Minimizing the Threat of Mosquitoes Around Your Home

As homeowners, it is crucial that you take action to prevent the spread of the West Nile Virus.  Help play your part and check areas that might make for suitable mosquito breeding grounds, such as gutters, pools, birdbaths, or buckets that may contain standing water in or around them.  If you do have a small pool or a bird bath, be sure to change the water at least once a week.
