Ice damming can happen to any gutter — clean or dirty, new or old. Temperature differential (inside to outside) and improper ventilation or insulation often cause snow to melt and run down to the roof edge where it collects and refreezes. The ice mass then traps water behind it that backs up under shingles and penetrates the home, resulting in interior damage.
One of the quickest ways to stop the flow of water into the home is to remove the gutter. Although it is a drastic measure, it will help alleviate the situation.

We do not recommend screening or gutter guards. Ned Stevens has searched for and experimented with all types of products that claim to prevent gutter clogs for nearly 60 years. In short, we’ve found that there’s no such thing as a “no clog” gutter.
We do sell and install gutter screens, but we stopped selling a top-of-the-line solid cover gutter guard. These systems allow debris in the gutters, they allow the water to pour off the top of gutters in heavy rain (which could lead to water in your basement), and they allow clogs. The screens we sell will keep out big debris, but let a significant amount of small debris into the gutters. This debris will cause clogs over time, and can even grow plants in the gutters. As such, even with screens, gutters need to be cleaned regularly.
The solution for gutter clogs is simple: clean the gutters on a regular schedule. You can do this by signing up for one of our ongoing service plans, and you won’t worry about your gutters again.

WOW! I called to get my gutters cleaned, the man I spoke to told me they did dryer vents as well - 2 birds, 1 stone!! He said they would be out within 2 weeks, they both came the next day and did a great job! Only problem was the gutter cleaners left the garbage, not sure if thats normal? No biggie, we picked it up! This company does excellent work and always cleans up after themselves. On their last visit I asked them to reattach a downspout that had blown off in a high wind.
