The United States may be young, but its roots stretch deep, especially when architectural history is concerned. Many of America’s oldest homes predate the foundation of the country, and some even date before the establishment of the first British or Spanish colonies. Take a look at some of these amazing homes and be wowed!

Taos Pueblos
Age: More than 1000 years old
Built well before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Taos Pueblos (seen above) is the oldest man-made housing structure in America. Built between 1000 and 1450 CE, the building features multiple stories and beautiful red adobe brick. Despite the age of the building, an estimated 150 people still live in the structure today.

Fairbanks House
Age: 379 years old
An excellent example of New England architecture, the Fairbanks House was built between 1637 and 1641 by Jonathan Fairbanke, a Puritan settler. Constructed with spectacular timber found on the property, the home remained in the Fairbanke family for 8 generations before it became a historic museum.

Richard Sparrow House
Age: 375 years old
Rumored to be owned by a pirate, the Richard Sparrow House is the oldest building in historic and beautiful Plymouth, MA. Located on 16 pristine acres, the house was built in 1640. Today, the home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an operational art gallery and museum.

C.A. Nothnagle Log House

Age: At least 372 years old
Quite possibly one of the few surviving log houses in the United States, this home was built between 1638 and 1643 and is located in Swedesboro, NJ. Designed and built by Finnish settlers, the home features original Scandinavian ironware and a fireplace that dates back to the building’s construction.

Age: 366 years old
Dating to 1649, the Old House is the oldest continuous residence in New York. Today, visitors can roam the grounds of the home while also exploring an old schoolhouse, a library and a 19th-century carriage house located adjacent to the Old House.

Age: Around 350 years old
While not officially confirmed, historians believe that the Ryves Holt House is the oldest surviving inn in the United States. Age: 354 years old
As the oldest home in Boston, this 1661 house is notable for its medieval style of architecture. While the structure remains original, the home was actually moved 500 feet in 1896 to avoid being demolished for newer buildings.
