What is the biggest reason gutter guards fail? It’s because daily small debris accumulates on top of the guard, and the dirty surface of the guard causes the rain water to spill right over the top. That water then pours right into your foundation, possibly flooding your basement.
Remember, gutter guards function on the physics principle that the water rolls along the edge of the guard, sticking to the surface, and pouring into the gutter. On a “controlled display” in your kitchen, they work great. After a year of pollen, dirt, roof shingle grit, ragweed, and everything else that flies through the air, lands on them, the entire physics principle is destroyed, and the rain water pours right off the end of the guard.
The next biggest reason they fail is because of nests: birds, bees, even chipmunks like to take advantage of the water and shelter provided by the covers. Covering the gutters provides these animals, birds, and insects with their own private condo!
However, once they clog, the problem is yours, not theirs. To clean the gutters, these systems usually have to be removed by roofers to avoid roof damage (which means parts of your roof may need to be replaced), and often times, after you pay the roofer’s bill, you now need to replace all the gutters!
Products like brushes placed in gutters, sponges placed in gutter, and other “different” concepts that come with “lifetime guarantees”, may seem to make sense to some, but small debris and decomposed leaves destroy these products, and cause gutter mayhem. These are some of the worst products that were sent to us for purchase.
Keep it simple and save your money by keeping them open, cleaning them on a regular schedule, and keeping them clean.
Remember, we used to sell and guarantee our “gutter guard”, and learned the hard way that there is no quick fix for clean gutters.
